Most Women Do Not Have a Wardrobe Problem. They Have a Self Problem Disguised as One.

Based on Episode 32 of Informed Choice with The Naija Goddess

Featuring Donna Hundley, Founder of The Designed Presence

Dr. Naija, The Naija Goddess, DFM, PhD September 29, 2026 5 min read
Dr. Naija and Donna Hundley discuss identity and the mask of confidence on Informed Choice.

Your closet may be holding more than clothes. Dr. Naija and Donna Hundley explore identity, chronic stress, the mask of confidence, and what it means to dress for the woman you are now.

Most women do not have a wardrobe problem. They have a self problem disguised as one.

That is not an insult. That is a clinical observation. Because when I look at what chronic stress, caregiving, loss, and years of performing for other people actually does to a woman's relationship with herself, the closet is always one of the first places the evidence shows up. Sizes she used to wear hanging like a museum exhibit of who she used to be. Tags still on things she bought for a version of herself she never quite became. The same three outfits on rotation because everything else feels like a costume.

Donna Hundley walked into my studio and said something I have not been able to stop thinking about since. She said: how can you possibly live today when everything in your closet is a memory of who you used to be?

She is right. And the reason it hit so hard is because this is not a fashion conversation. It is a neurological one.

Here is what the research actually shows. The clothes you wear activate what cognitive scientists call enclothed cognition, the measurable effect that clothing has on the psychological processes of the person wearing it. When you put on something that belongs to a past version of you, your brain does not just register discomfort. It registers identity mismatch. And identity mismatch is a low-grade stressor. It keeps the prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain responsible for authentic decision-making and self-perception, in a state of mild but constant conflict.

This is why the woman who clears out her closet often describes the experience as feeling lighter, like she can breathe again. That is not metaphor. That is her nervous system releasing a load it was carrying without her even knowing it.

So here is what I want you to do this week. Close your eyes and think about the last time you felt the most like yourself, inside and out. What were you wearing? What was happening around you? Why did it feel that way? Write it down. Then open your closet and ask one question about every single item in there: does this belong to who I am right now, or who I used to be?

You do not have to throw anything away today. You just have to start telling the truth about it.

If you are ready to go deeper than a closet clean-out and actually build the framework for how you present yourself to the world, Donna's work inside The Designed Presence is where that happens: https://www.thedesignedpresence.com

    This Week on Informed Choice

Donna Hundley spent 20 years as one of the highest-performing HR executives in rooms that expected her to be unshakeable. She was also a functioning alcoholic nobody around her knew about, a caregiver watching her father die of the same disease she was hiding, and a woman who woke up every morning not recognizing the face looking back at her.

This episode is the most honest conversation I have had on this show. We talk about the mask of confidence, what it actually costs to keep wearing it, and what it took for Donna to finally take it off and build something real on the other side.
